Issues : Corrected slurs of Op. 21 in GE1

b. 77-78

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Slur to next bar in A (contextual interpretation)

Slur to c2 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In A the slur in the 2nd half of bar 77 does not reach the end of the group of hemidemisemiquavers. It is most probably an inaccuracy; however, it is unknown whether Chopin wanted to lead it only until the end of the bar or lead it further. The slur at the beginning of bar 78 (on a new page of the manuscript) clearly indicates the latter. The solution adopted in the editions may be considered an alternative interpretation of A, particularly since the slur in bar 77 was corrected in GE1, most probably by Chopin.

No slur in A

Slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The slur in the L.H. was added in GE (→FEEE), probably by Chopin – traces of corrections in print prove that he extended here the slur in the R.H., originally starting in GE1 only from demisemiquavers.

b. 87

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

In GE1, particularly in later copies, one can see clear traces of correcting the slurs in the R.H. in the 2nd half of the bar – initially, the slur started (contrary to A) already on the 3rd beat of the bar. Apart from the trace of the original slur, one can also see distortions of the wavy line of the arpeggio, which suggests that the proofreading could have also embraced the upper part of the last chord.
